A veritable belvedere overlooking the Rhône Valley, Crussol Mountain is home to many treasures: its quarries reveal a fascinating geological heritage, its holm oak forests offer unique flora and fauna to discover along the way, and its historical heritage is revealed as you hike from the summit of the castle to the winding paths of La Villette.
Description
- Saint-Péray Centre: In front of the restaurant Aux Cœurs Fidèles, walk up Quai Jules Bouvat to the footbridge. Cross the footbridge and the roundabout. Enter the residential Crussol neighbourhood on the left. The road becomes a path that leads to the Château de Beauregard on the left. From the Château de Beauregard, follow the sign for Crussol Accès piétons (Crussol pedestrian access) on the right. The stairs lead to the Auberge de Crussol. Continue towards the Château reception opposite.
- Crussol car park: Go up the access road leading to the Crussol reception
- Crussol reception Take the path on the right.
- Les Hauts du Mialan Continue straight ahead through this forest on the western slope of the mountain.
- Baume des Bois From this point, you can shorten the route by taking the path on the left, which leads directly to Chavaran Le Haut. Otherwise, continue on the path on the right. At the next crossroads, 250 metres away, take the path that climbs to the left.
- Ployes Le Haut To see the ancient Roman quarries, follow the GR42 southwards, then return towards Ployes Le Haut. On the ridges of the Crussol massif, pass the "Chavaran le Haut" and Chandarcet le Haut masts in succession, keeping towards Crussol-Saint Péray at all times.
- Chavaran Le Haut: Continue along the Crussol ridges, following the GR 42.
- Chandarcet Le Haut: Continue towards the ruins of Crussol Castle.
- Enter Crussol Castle through the south postern gate and descend the ruins through the villette (a cluster of around a hundred ruined houses at the foot of the castle) and exit the ramparts through the Chatelet, a remarkable fortified gate that protected these dwellings. You will pass the statue of Notre-Dame de Crussol, which was erected at the end of the Second World War in gratitude to the Virgin Mary for sparing the town from bombing. You will also pass the Château de Beauregard (private) before descending via the GR to SAINT-PERAY.
